About Habitual Designs
Habitual Designs is a Hudson Valley landscape design studio focused on creating outdoor environments that are enduring, ecologically grounded, and deeply connected to place.
Working with homeowners, architects, builders, and community partners to create landscapes that reflect the character of the Hudson Valley, the studio approaches landscape as both structure and living system — shaping gardens that mature beautifully over time while restoring a deeper relationship between people and the land.
In a region defined by its fields, forests, rivers, and agricultural heritage, each project is shaped by the ecology and cultural character of the Hudson Valley itself. Planting design, spatial structure, and long-term stewardship are considered together, ensuring landscapes that are resilient, expressive, and designed to evolve across seasons and decades.
Lily Johnson
Habitual Designs was founded by Lily Johnson, a Hudson Valley–based landscape designer devoted to shaping landscapes that honor the ecology and character of the Hudson Valley.
A seventh-generation gardener and farmer, Lily brings a deep respect for the region’s landscapes and agricultural traditions to her work. Her approach has been shaped through hands-on stewardship — building and tending gardens, growing food, composting, and cultivating a homestead that includes chickens, bees, and perennial systems.
Her design philosophy focuses on restoring what has been depleted, working with what thrives naturally in the Hudson Valley, and shaping landscapes that remain resilient in the face of a changing climate.
